Every year, the Université de Rouen Normandie welcomes nearly 770 doctoral students, divided into 8 doctoral schools and assigned to one of the institution’s 37 research units. The Maison du doctorat will help you with all your doctoral studies.
Normandie Université’s doctoral schools
Throughout the doctoral process, doctoral schools train doctors and prepare them for successful integration into working life.
In Normandy, doctoral schools bring together doctoral students in the same scientific field from :
- Rouen Normandy University
- Caen Normandy University
- University of Le Havre Normandie,
- ENSICAEN
- INSA Rouen Normandie
- As well as associated or partner establishments hosting doctoral students: ESIGELEC, UniLaSalle, CESI, ESITC, GANIL, ENVA…
Doctoral schools ensure :
- implement an admissions policy for new doctoral students, based on explicit, public criteria. They inform students about the conditions of access, the skills required, the funding available, and the nature, quality and rates of professional activity after obtaining a doctorate;
- organize scientific exchanges between doctoral students and their scientific community;
- offer doctoral students disciplinary training activities;
- ensure a quality approach to training follow-up by setting up individual doctoral student thesis follow-up committees;
- contribute to international openness.
Doctoral training in Normandy is organized around 8 disciplinary Doctoral Schools (ED):
- ED 98 Droit Normandie (DN)
- ED 242 Économie-Gestion Normandie (EGN)
- ED 497 Normande de Biologie Intégrative, Santé, Environnement (NBISE)
- ED 508 Normande de Chimie (NC)
- ED 556 Man, Societies, Risks, Territory (HSRT)
- ED 558 Normandie Humanités (NH)
- ED 590 Mathematics, Information and Systems Engineering (MIIS)
- ED 591 Physics, Engineering Sciences, Materials, Energy (PSIME)
Each doctoral school is managed by a site director and deputy directors, assisted by administrators and a board that includes doctoral student representatives. This board defines the actions to be taken and has its own budget. The operation of each Doctoral School is governed by internal regulations (accessible via the ED website).

Register or re-register for a PhD at URN
Enrolment in the first year of the doctoral program is decided by the head of the establishment on the recommendation of the director of the doctoral school, after receiving the opinion of the thesis director and the director of the research unit or team on the quality of the project and the conditions under which it will be carried out.
To be enrolled in a doctoral program, candidates must hold a degree conferring the grade of Master. If this diploma requirement is not met, the head of the establishment may, by dispensation and on the recommendation of the doctoral school board, enroll in the doctoral program people who have completed studies at an equivalent level, or who have benefited from the validation of acquired experience provided for in article L. 613-5 of the Education Code.
Each doctoral school has its own admission policy, set out in its internal regulations.
